Confused Which Hearing Aid to Choose? We Compared Every Popular Over-the-Counter Hearing Aid So You Don't Have To
Walk into any drugstore, or search online, and you'll find dozens of hearing aids. $20. $289. $999. $2,699. Every box promises "crystal clear sound." Every website says it's the best.
So which one actually works?
I fitted hearing aids for 30 years. And even I found the over-the-counter market confusing when it opened up in 2022. My readers kept writing to me with the same question: "Which one should I buy?"
So I stopped guessing. I bought the most popular over-the-counter hearing aids in America with my own money, put them side by side on my kitchen table, and tested them on real people with mild to moderate hearing loss.
Here is everything we found, so you don't have to spend months and thousands of dollars finding out yourself.
How we tested
I didn't care about technical numbers on the box. I scored every hearing aid on the six things that matter when you actually wear them:
- Voices in noise: can you follow the person across the table in a busy restaurant?
- Comfort and visibility: can you wear them all day, and can anyone see them?
- Ease of use: can someone who isn't good with gadgets set them up?
- Battery: rechargeable, and does it last the whole day?
- Total cost: the price on the box, plus batteries, parts and repairs over the years.
- Risk: trial period, warranty, and whether a real company will still be there to stand behind it in five years. This one turned out to matter more than I expected.

#8: Amazon "hearing amplifiers" ($20 to $89)
Our score: 2.0 / 10
Most of what you find under "hearing aid" on Amazon is not a hearing aid. It's an amplifier. It turns everything up, voices, traffic, the fridge, your own breathing, and can't separate speech from background noise. That's why they whistle and why voices stay muffled.
Good: Cheap.
Not so good: Not a real hearing aid. Painfully loud in noise. Usually no support and difficult returns.
#7: MDHearing NEO XS ($297 to $397)

Our score: 5.5 / 10
A small, rechargeable in-canal model at a budget price. In independent lab testing it scored lowest of the popular OTC models for speech clarity, and our testers noticed the same: fine in a quiet room, struggling in a busy one.
Good: Small and rechargeable. Low price.
Not so good: Weak speech clarity in noise. Tiny controls that are hard to use with stiff fingers.
#6: Audien Atom Pro 2 ($289)

Our score: 5.8 / 10
The closest competitor on price. Rechargeable, in-canal, no app needed. But independent reviewers rated it below average for speech, both in quiet and in noise, and our testers agreed: louder, but not much clearer.
Good: Low price. Simple, no app.
Not so good: Voices not much clearer in noisy places. Not fully invisible in the ear.
#5: Sony CRE-C10 ($699)

Our score: 6.5 / 10
A well-known name and a decent in-ear design. But at $699 it still runs on tiny disposable batteries that need changing every few days, which our older testers with stiff fingers found frustrating.
Good: Trusted brand. Discreet in the ear.
Not so good: Disposable batteries. Nearly three times the price of our winner.
#4: Jabra Enhance Select ($1,195 to $1,995)

Our score: 8.0 / 10
The most advanced over-the-counter option we tested, with remote adjustments from audiologists and phone calls straight into your ears. If you want every feature and the price doesn't matter, it's excellent.
Good: Excellent sound. An audiologist can adjust them from a distance. Phone calls straight into your ears.
Not so good: Up to $1,995. Visible behind the ear. Needs a smartphone app.
#3: Lexie B2 Plus, Powered by Bose ($999)

Our score: 8.2 on sound alone / 10
Lexie surprised me. It's powered by Bose, yes, the Bose. Bose sold its hearing aid technology to Lexie, and you can hear it: clear, natural sound and a helpful app. On sound alone it beat Jabra at half the price.
So why isn't it higher? Read on, because #2 has the same problem.
Good: Bose sound quality. Helpful app. Fair price.
Not so good: The company behind it is shutting down its US operations (see #2). Needs a smartphone app. Visible behind the ear.
#2: Eargo ($799 to $2,699)

Our score: 8.5 on sound alone / 10
On sound alone, Eargo was one of the best we tested. Discreet, comfortable, clear in noise.
But in July 2026 its parent company, which also owns Lexie, announced it is winding down its US operations. In my view, they simply couldn't compete with direct sellers like Modern Hearing, which deliver the same quality for a fraction of the price because they cut out the middlemen.
A hearing aid is something you wear for years. Without a company behind it, there's no warranty, no spare parts and nobody to call.
Good: Excellent sound. Discreet.
Not so good: Company winding down. Do not buy now.
#1: Modern Hearing Comfort ($249)
Our score: 9.1 / 10
The cheapest real hearing aid in our test, the one most of our testers wanted to keep, and endorsed by 528 clinicians on FrontRowMD.
I'll be honest. Going in, I expected Modern Hearing to land near the bottom with the other budget models. $249 for a pair didn't seem possible.
Instead it scored highest of all, on sound, comfort, ease of use and cost. And unlike #2 and #3, there is a company with a warehouse in New Jersey and a 1-year warranty standing behind it.
Then the results came in.
In the busy-restaurant test, Modern Hearing kept up with Eargo and Jabra, hearing aids costing four to eight times as much. Inside are the same quality parts the big clinic brands use, and a smart sound chip that turns the room down and brings the voice across the table forward. Not louder. Clearer.
It sits inside the ear, so nobody can see it. It's rechargeable: the case charges it overnight and one charge lasts all day. No tiny batteries.
And it was the easiest to use of everything we tested. No app. No hearing test. No account. Our least tech-savvy tester, 81 years old, had them in and working in two minutes.
Why is it so much cheaper? Modern Hearing sells directly from a warehouse in New Jersey. No clinic, no salesperson on commission, no TV campaign. The company was started by a man who had worked in the hearing aid industry and knew what the parts actually cost.
I'm not the only one who rates it:
- Endorsed by 528 clinicians on FrontRowMD, and the number keeps growing. You can see every one of them, with their name and practice, on Modern Hearing's website
- 4.5 out of 5 from more than 3,400 verified customer reviews
- In a survey of 5,408 customers, 91% said they hear better in groups and noisy places (self-reported, May 2026)
- FDA registered as a medical device
- 45-day home trial and 1-year warranty
Since this article was published, Modern Hearing has gained tremendous attention and interest.
The company has reached out to our editorial team to inform us that, for a limited time, they are offering our readers an exclusive 50% discount on Modern Hearing.
Plus, every order comes with a 45-day risk free trial at home, 1 year warranty and free insured shipping. If you don't experience clearer hearing within 45 days, you can just send them back.

I'll be honest, my first thought was that Modern Hearing is a scam. $249 claiming to do what a $4,000 clinic pair does. Nothing in my life that sounded too good to be true ever was. I only ordered because you can send them back within 45 days. Three weeks with Modern Hearing now and they are excellent. I hear my wife clearly at the dinner table again. Should have ordered them a year ago.

Same exact thought Frank. Figured worst case I send the Modern Hearing pair back and I'm out nothing. I kept them. They work great and I wear them every day.

I have a buddy who is a retired audiologist. I took my Modern Hearing pair over and he opened one right up on his kitchen table. He pointed at the chip and said it's a Knowles part, the same one he used to fit in the $4,000 units at his old practice. He could not believe the price. That settled it for me. Modern Hearing is the real thing at a fraction of the cost.

Finally a comparison that tells you which one to buy instead of listing twenty. The bit explaining amplifiers versus actual hearing aids should be common knowledge and it's not. I bought two pairs of Amazon amplifiers before I understood the difference. Modern Hearing is a real hearing aid and it shows.

For two years I told my wife everyone was mumbling. Turns out it was me, not them. Hard thing for a man to admit. Wish I'd stopped being stubborn a lot sooner. The Modern Hearing pair has been in every day since it arrived and I can finally follow conversations again.

My worry with Modern Hearing was the setup. I'm not good with gadgets and I figured there'd be an app and a manual the size of a phone book. There was none of that. Charged them, put them in, done. They worked right away. If I can do it anyone can.

I live in New Jersey about 25 minutes from the Modern Hearing warehouse. I was skeptical so I called and asked if I could pick my pair up in person. They said yes. Real warehouse, real people who answer the phone. That told me everything I needed to know. Ordered a pair for my brother too.

Two weeks with Modern Hearing now. Sent my $1,499 Costco pair back and got every dollar returned. Modern Hearing works just as well for a tenth of the price. Already told three guys at the VFW. Should've found these sooner.

My son sent me this after I missed another call from my daughter. Just ordered Modern Hearing with the discount. On Social Security so $249 is a lot easier than the $4,200 HearingLife quoted me. Fingers crossed, will report back.

Margaret you will be fine. I was nervous ordering Modern Hearing too. Best decision I made all year, I hear my grandkids on the phone again. Come back and tell us.

Medicare not covering a dime of this is criminal. 45 years I paid into that system. This article made me angry for all the right reasons. Sharing it with everyone I know.

TV volume went from 44 down to 11 with Modern Hearing. My wife can't believe it. Had Walgreens drugstore aids for years but the Modern Hearing pair is smaller, no whistling, and they recharge. No more fumbling with batteries every Monday.
